“I want my kids to become smarter. I want to be a teacher in my own house.”

Victor Rojas and his wife Patricia want the best for their three children: successful schooling, robust careers, and happy, healthy families.
And so, the 16-year Fort Wayne residents enrolled in Ready To Learn/Ready Schools, a United Way-supported program designed to help parents become better parents. Especially where their children’s schooling is concerned.
“I want my kids to become smarter,” Victor Rojas says. “I want to be a teacher in my own house.”
The former police officer in Mexico, now a Fort Wayne waiter, says he didn’t spend nearly enough time with his children when he got home from work.
“Now,” he says, “I stay closer to my kids. Now, I can understand why it’s important to spend more time with the kids.”
And indeed, his 8-year-old daughter, Veronica, has noticed the difference. She says he’s a better dad now, helping her with her homework and playing with her and her two younger siblings, Victor and Johana.
Some day, Victor Rojas says, he’d like to go back to school and raise his own educational level. But for now, the children come first.
“I try to be a good father,” he says. “If I can’t make dreams myself, maybe my children can make my dreams.”
